Psychology 101: A Map of How Minds Are Studied
What psychology actually is, the big schools of thought, the branches worth knowing, and how to read psychological claims without being fooled.
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour — how people perceive, remember, decide, feel, and act, alone and around others. That’s a huge territory, and most confusion about psychology comes from not knowing the map. This page is the map: the field’s short history, its major branches, and — most importantly — how to tell solid findings from pop-psych noise. The other docs in this domain then go deep on the parts you’ll actually use: biases, memory, motivation, other people, and emotions.
A very short history (why it matters)
Psychology’s history is a series of arguments about what counts as evidence, and each era left tools we still use:
- Introspection (1879–1910s). Wilhelm Wundt opens the first psychology lab; the method is trained self-observation. Problem: two people introspecting the same experience report different things. Not reproducible → abandoned.
- Psychoanalysis (1890s–). Freud proposes that behaviour is driven by unconscious conflict. Enormously influential culturally, but most of it is unfalsifiable — there’s no observation that could prove it wrong — so it drifted out of scientific psychology. The durable residue: the idea that a lot of mental processing happens outside awareness (that part held up).
- Behaviorism (1910s–1950s). Watson and Skinner respond by banning the mind from the science entirely: study only observable stimulus → response. This gave us conditioning, reinforcement, and most of what we know about habit formation — but it couldn’t explain language, planning, or why two people respond differently to the same stimulus.
- The cognitive revolution (1950s–). The computer gives psychology a new metaphor: the mind as an information-processing system with inputs, memory, and computation. Suddenly internal states are studiable again — you infer them from reaction times, error patterns, and clever experimental designs. This is the paradigm most of these docs live in.
- Cognitive neuroscience (1990s–). Brain imaging (fMRI, EEG) links the information-processing story to biology. Good for grounding theories; often over-sold in headlines (“this brain region lights up!” usually means very little by itself).
The branches you’ll actually encounter

Two boundary notes. Psychiatry is medicine (MDs, can prescribe); clinical psychology is the psychological science of disorders and therapy. And neuroscience studies the brain’s hardware; psychology studies the software-level behaviour — they constrain each other but answer different questions.

How to read a psychology claim (the critical toolkit)
This is the most valuable section on this page. Psychology headlines are famously unreliable — not because the field is fake, but because single studies get reported as facts. Your filter:
- Correlation is not causation. “People who journal are happier” does not mean journaling causes happiness — happier people may simply journal more, or a third factor (free time, conscientiousness) may drive both. Only a randomized experiment licenses a causal claim.
- Effect size beats p-value. “Statistically significant” can mean real but tiny. An effect that shifts an outcome by 2% can be significant in a 10,000-person study and still not matter for your life.
- One study is an anecdote with error bars. Trust meta-analyses and repeated replications, not a single flashy finding.
- WEIRD samples. A huge fraction of classic findings come from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic undergraduates. Some generalize; some very much don’t.
The replication crisis (know this)
Around 2011–2015, large collaborative projects re-ran classic studies and found that only about 40–60% of published psychology findings replicated. Casualties and question marks include ego depletion (willpower as a depletable fuel), most social priming (e.g. reading “old-age” words making you walk slower), power posing’s hormonal claims, and the classic tellings of the Stanford prison experiment. The field responded with real reforms — preregistration, open data, larger samples — and the findings covered in this domain’s docs are ones that have survived that filter (loss aversion, testing effect, spacing effect, conformity, the Big Five). Where a famous result is shaky, the doc says so.
